It is the responsibility of the Building Department of the Town of Southeast to enforce New York State Building Codes and Regulations and the local Code of the Town. The enforcement of these codes includes reviewing applications and drawings, and providing advice and guidance for obtaining permits for all types of construction, including work on new and existing residential and commercial structures. This processing includes monitoring of the construction through specific inspections and interfacing with all other county and state agencies, ultimately providing for compliance and occupancy.
The services of the building department include:
- Processing of applications for building permits.
- Inspections for building permits and issuance of Certificates of Occupancy for completed construction.
- Enforcement of the NYCRR (New York Code of Rules and Regulations), the Building Code
- Referrals of applications to the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Southeast Planning Department, where appropriate
- Searches of historical building records.
The building department works in cooperation with the Putnam County Health Department, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and county inspectors for plumbing and electrical work, in its review of building plans for permits and construction.
While the term "construction" as used here is broad and general, residents and contractors are advised and encouraged to contact the Building Department for assistance regarding specific information that may be applicable to their individual requirements.
